A day hike in the Andes, right on Santiago’s doorstep. Climb through native scrubland to a panoramic viewpoint, with condors and águila mora often overhead.

This scenic ridge trail climbs from Puente Ñilhue (1,034m), part of the Parque Cordillera protected trail network, to Alto del Naranjo (1,850m), a spectacular plateau with sweeping views over Santiago's entire valley and its ring of surrounding peaks. Less crowded than Santiago's better-known treks, it delivers the same authentic Andes experience.

The trail winds through native matorral esclerófilo, the sclerophyllous scrubland typical of central Chile's precordillera, with species like litre, quillay and espino growing alongside striking quisco cacti that stand tall among the vegetation. Keep an eye on the sky, since this is condor and águila mora (black-chested buzzard-eagle) territory, and sightings are common along the ridge.

As you climb, the views open up over Santiago's entire valley and city skyline, and from the top, a full panorama of the Central Andes unfolds, with the snow-capped Cerro El Plomo (5,424m) standing out among the surrounding summits.

Difficulty: Moderate — a brief rocky scramble at the start, then a clear ridge trail, with real elevation gain and altitude to respect.
